Let’s face it guys, the Internet is the new marketplace for the 21st century and it’s where all the action is. Everyday more and more people are starting online businesses. The number of Internet marketers continues to grow. The Internet today offers countless opportunities of making money online. Getting started with an online moneymaking scheme has only got easier and simpler. These days, it takes just a few clicks of your mouse to sign up for a business and call yourself an online businessman. Work at home opportunities are luring mothers, students, retired and aging persons into joining the Internet moneymaking bandwagon in large numbers. Indeed, the online business scenario never looked so exciting!

However, things are not so bright always. Even as millions of us are playing at the game of making money online, only a handful can actually be called successful. It’s alarming to learn that less than 10% of all online businesses can actually be called successful. A closer investigation into the reasons behind their failure reveals that it is not always due to a bad or unpopular product that an online business fails to succeed. The fault, most often, lies with inadequate or improper publicity. Let’s take a closer look.

Every business needs some degree of publicity. You cannot expect people (your prospective clients) to know about your business unless you advertise or adopt other suitable measures to promote it. An Internet business is no different. If you don’t promote your business, you will not make a cent out of it. And this is where the success of your online business lies. In other words, starting a business is only half the story. You also need to start a well-planned Internet marketing campaign to ensure that it continues to grow and thrive.

Talking of online businesses, one of the most crucial elements for their success is traffic. Every business needs customers. For an online business, it’s traffic. Without a steady flow of quality traffic to your site, all your efforts could ultimately prove to be of zero worth. That’s why one of the core aims of any Internet marketing campaign is to ensure the flow of a good amount of traffic to the site it is promoting. Traffic to a site doesn’t mean that getting more and more people to visit your site is the end of the story. The focus should be on getting targeted, quality traffic. In other words, if you can ensure that the people visiting your site are genuinely interested in the product you are selling and match the right demographics, the probability of their ending up buying from your site increases manifold.

This is where we get into the intricate game of conversion rates. A conversion rate is determined by the measure of how many people visit your site and how many of them actually end up buying from your site. For example, you could have 1 million visitors to your site. But with a conversion rate of just 0.001, and a profit margin of $5, you'd be making 0.001/100 X 1 million X $5 = $50. It is of utmost importance to try to improve the conversion rate as it directly increases your profits. Conversion rate is the real secret of succeeding online. Having lots of traffic alone is not sufficient unless you have a good conversion rate.

If you are serious about starting an aggressive Internet marketing campaign, you’d be glad to know that there is no dearth of excellent tools to help you do that. However, you need to exercise some amount of discretion while choosing from among them. A PPC campaign (such as Google AdWords) can seem like a tempting proposition. However, if you’ve just started out with your online business, refrain from spending too much capital on an extensive PPC campaign. If you can, start with just a few low-popularity keywords and get to learn the ropes. Running a successful PPC campaign requires some degree of experience and expertise.

Opt-in lists are a great way of identifying targeted visitors. Many Internet markers have used it to great effect and its popularity as an Internet marketing tool continues undiminished. One of the most common ways of using the opt-in scheme is to tie it up with a newsletter service. You too can do it. Set up an auto-responder service to deliver pre-written newsletters at specific intervals to all the people who sign up for it through the opt-in service. On one hand, your subscribers would be happy to receive the free newsletters from you, and more significantly, on the other hand, you’d be building up a list of people who are genuinely interested in your area of business. These are your potential customers. You can reach out to them later with your product offering and they would know you and would be happy to check out your offering closely.

Plan out your Internet marketing campaign carefully and choose from the wide variety of tools available. Remember, your online success depends on how well you market your product.
