Ebusiness or electronic business is referred to all those transactions that are carried out over the Internet. It is popularly referred to as e-commerce. In recent years, ebusiness or ecommerce, whatever name you use to refer to it has become very popular and today billions of dollars of transactions are being carried out over the Internet. In fact there are countless businesses that are solely dependent on receiving the proceeds of their sales online. Ebusiness typically happens through credit card transactions where the purchaser has to put in his/her credit card number and other details such as the Name, Expiry date, CVV number etc. However there are some other modes too such as cash on delivery, wherein just the sale is made online and the money is received when the product is delivered to the customer. But in most cases, the transaction is through the credit card.

Initially there were fears about credit card transactions online as many people felt that it might not be safe due to the presence of hackers who rob the customer’s credit card details and make fake transactions. However these fears have mostly gone today with the improved security such as SSL certifications and others.

Online ebusiness solutions – why ecommerce has become so popular?

In the last few years, ecommerce or ebusiness has become so popular because it is convenient for both the business and the consumer.

With ecommerce, a business can finally break the barrier of space and reach out to the world – this of course enables the business to penetrate into new markets and benefit from the new opportunities that are out there. It also allows the business to take the product to the consumer easily and offer it at a much lower price. In the traditional world, it would have cost a fortune to set up a shop in the farthest corners of the world – and how many shops can a company set up? 50, may be a 100, perhaps 300. But with ecommerce, there is just the website and it is a single store front that is accessible to all.

Ecommerce also offers a level playing field. In the traditional market place there is a huge difference between a multi national and a small business – a small business never can match up to the big business when it comes to resources and marketing budget. But on the Internet, these differences are greatly evened out. Most businesses have an equal chance to be successful.

Online ebusiness is great for the consumer too because he can at last shop when he needs to and that too 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are no closures. Plus, he or she can browse through the products on display right from the desktop – there is no need to drive to the mall to find something. And ecommerce is hugely convenient as well. All the person does before making a purchase is browse through the products at a few online stores to compare them and also the price at which they are offered and then buy it. The comparison is also easier to do online. There are some huge emalls that store almost anything from books to jewelry, from electronics to golf shoes, from software products to video games and more.

But there are problems of online ebusiness too

But there are some problems of ebusiness too and the # 1 is that, there is always a delivery time that is needed. In other words, if you needed to buy something right now, for example some home appliance, you would never get it because the online business would take time to deliver it to you (as this time differs according to where you are located) after you have placed your order and made the payment.

The second problem is that in ecommerce, the touch and feel is missing that you can experience at an offline shop. There are many who love the browse through the racks and the shelves and get a feel of the products that are displayed there before deciding to buy or not. But this cannot be done online. And so there are those who say that the traditional offline stores would always be there – but the online ecommerce stores would also keep doing good business.

Online ebusiness can be classified into the following…
  • business-to-business (B2B)
  • business-to-consumer (B2C)
B2B: B2B is referred to when a business is offering something to another business. While in most such cases, there is no online transaction taking place here, but since the handshake is happening over the Internet that leads to a transaction later, this is clubbed under ecommerce. Lead generation websites fall under this category.

B2C: This is the popular e-mall or online store that we come across. The visitor browses through the products on display and purchases what he/she needs.
