If you have a website, you need to promote it – yes, website promotion is really very important. No matter what your business, the fact is, there are likely thousands of websites, perhaps more in your industry and all of them are vying for the attention of the customer. The competition is hard on the Internet and because of this, it has been seen that most online businesses end up as a failure. While some of these failures are on account of a product that is not up to it and some websites fail due to a faulty business model, but the fact is that, a vast majority of them fail because they are not promoted well.

According to statistics, a huge majority of people find new websites from a search engine – and the statistics also claim that most people who are using a search engine to find websites like yours, do not go beyond page 2 or at the most page 3 of the search result page for a popular keyword. What this means is that, if your website is not ranked within the first 3 pages in the popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo, then you are losing out. And not only that, your competitors are gaining from the traffic. Websites that are ranked lower than that never have enough visitors to convert them into a high number of customers – and that is why they end up as failures.

That is why web site promotion is so important.

So here is a list of what web site promotion aims to do
  • Web site promotion aims to enhance the visibility of the web site at the search engines through search engine optimization, by running PPC campaigns and banner advertisements.
  • Web site promotion aims to enhance traffic to the website from the search engines and from the Internet.
  • Web site promotion aims to promote the website through other means such as email marketing.
  • Web site promotion aims to leverage the power of networking by starting an affiliate program.
  • Web site promotion may also mean optimizing the website itself to enhance visitor behavior and revenues.
The good news about this is that, web site promotion is not really a difficult thing to do. Very often the owner of the website does it himself, but there are many who prefer to give the job to a professional. It also needs to be remembered here that web site promotion is a continuous process – you or the professional will continue having to do it because the competition is stiff out there.

Content and web site promotion: The value of content is immense when you are trying to promote your website. That is because the search engines tend to give a lot of importance to content and so often those web sites that have a lot of content tend to rank better. Search engine robots also tend to spider those web pages more often where the content is regularly updated. This is why you will find that blogs do so well on the Internet. You may also start a blog – remember to write interesting and informative articles and post them to the blog at least twice a week. Your blog is sure to generate good traffic which can then be directed to your web site.

Article writing is another good way to promote your website. There are two ways in which you can do it. You can either post the articles in a Article section in your website itself (this will in all likelihood improve the search engine ranks of your website), or you may submit the articles at the many article directories (this will enhance the visibility of the articles and enable you to get traffic when users click on the link that you have provided in the ‘bio’ section of the articles.

Email marketing and web site promotion: Email marketing can also help you promote your website. But before doing this, you need to have a database of opt-in email addresses – buying such a database (though many do it) is never a good idea because there is always the scare of spams. Email servers have become more strict and smarter today and thus, most bulk mails now are filtered and are either not delivered at all or they reach the ‘Bulk’ folder.

But supposing you have such a database wherein the people have accepted to receive email promotions, then you can work with this virtual goldmine.

The email may contain text or you may also have an image in the mail. But there has to be a ‘call to action’ or what you want the receiver of the email to do once he/she has opened the email and gone through the matter. Providing a link to your website allows the receiver to visit your website – and this naturally increases the traffic to your web site and gives you an opportunity to do business.
